Microsoft Partners with Conste...The deal, announced by Constellation Energy, marks its largest-ever power purchase agreement
In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft has signed an agreement with Constellation Energy to revive Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, which was previously shut down in 2019. The deal, announced by Constellation Energy, marks its largest-ever power purchase agreement and aims to supply energy exclusively for Microsoft’s AI projects and data centers.
The plant, which experienced the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history in 1979, will be renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center in honor of former Constellation CEO Chris Crane. It is expected to become operational again by 2028, delivering a steady, carbon-free power supply to meet the growing energy demands of AI and data storage. This 20-year agreement is projected to create around 3,400 jobs and contribute over $16 billion to Pennsylvania’s GDP. Governor Josh Shapiro praised the initiative, underscoring the critical role of nuclear energy in delivering reliable and sustainable power.
Despite its economic potential, the revival of Three Mile Island has raised concerns due to its controversial history. The plant’s partial meltdown in 1979 led to new regulations and significantly slowed the U.S. nuclear industry’s growth. However, with the global push for carbon-free energy, nuclear power is once again seen as a key component of the nation’s energy future.
