Rich Homie Quan, an Atlanta rapper, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, passed away on Thursday at the age of 34, confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner. An autopsy is set for Friday; the cause of death is still under investigation.
With his first successful hit Type of Way in 2013 and his chart-topping Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) in 2015, Rich Homie Quan became well-known in the latter half of the 2010s. Working with key figures in the business like 2 Chainz, Young Thug, and Gucci Mane, he became as one of Atlanta's leading figures in modern rap. Quan faced many difficulties on his path to fame. Being brought up in a single-parent home, he first aspired to play professional baseball, but after spending 15 months in jail for burglary in 2011, he realized that music was his true destiny. His return into society marked the start of his rise in the rap scene, which eventually led to nominations for the BET and BET Hip Hop Awards. Social media has been filled with tributes to him since his passing. In sharing their sorrow, Quavo, Jacquees, and 2 Chainz said on Instagram, "Special prayer for you and your family... my condolences." One of the engineers, who worked with Quan often, Alex Tumay, described him "one of the nicest people I ever worked with."
The impact of Rich Homie Quan continues to influence the Atlanta rap community. The music business is reeling from his unexpected passing.
