5 Reasons Why Every Smart Home Needs a Portable Power Station
The Silicon Review
18 November, 2024

As more and more people invest in smart devices to manage almost everything — from comfort to security — losing power is becoming more than a simple inconvenience. When power goes out, so does your connection to the tools that make daily life smoother and safer.

One way to prevent such interruptions is to invest in a portable power station for your home. If you've been getting into home automation lately, here are five good reasons to consider adding a power station to your smart home setup.

1 - Stay Comfortable During Power Outages

One of the biggest benefits of a portable power station is the comfort it brings when the grid fails. Imagine a storm hits, and suddenly, your heater or air conditioning shuts off. With a power station, you can keep essential devices running, like space heaters, fans, or even small appliances, ensuring a comfortable environment regardless of the weather.

Generators can achieve the same goal. However, instead of requiring fuel, power stations run on batteries. This makes them quieter, cleaner, easier to maintain, and more suitable for indoor use. You can't run a diesel generator in your apartment, but you can use the Delta Pro Ultra power station without issue.

2 - Ensure Uninterrupted Operation

Being able to control appliances via wi-fi is one of the hallmarks of modern smart homes. However, if the power goes down, you lose access to that connectivity. Even if the power comes back in a few minutes, some of your appliances may not work properly after a forced reboot. Having backup power can minimize the risk of issues.

With a bit of tinkering, you can even set up automation to detect when the grid is down and shut off non-essential devices. Allowing the essential stuff to operate on backup power for hours or even days depending on your setup.

3 - Store Green Power to Use Later

If you’ve invested in solar panels or another renewable energy source, a portable power station can be an excellent way to store excess energy. When the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, any extra energy generated by your solar panels can be stored in the power station’s batteries, giving you a clean, renewable power source to draw from when needed.

4 - Take Advantage of Off-Peak Rates

Many utility companies offer cheaper rates during off-peak hours, typically during the night when fewer people are using power. With a portable power station linked to a smart home, you can automate it so that the battery charges during off-peak hours. You can then use that charge during peak hours, helping keep your electricity bills low.

5 - Keep Your Security Systems Up

Modern security systems will typically have batteries as a backup during power outages. However, for cameras and a few other security devices, the battery may only support the core functions of the camera, cutting off things like wi-fi access and remote control. In addition, if you've installed a DIY security system, it may not have a battery backup at all. If you want to make sure your security is fully functional during a blackout, it's a good idea to have backup power.

Don't forget, there is more to security than just cameras and sensors. Criminals typically look for easy targets, and if your house is the only one with the lights up during a widespread blackout, you'll be very unlikely to be a target of any opportunistic burglars.
