Cboe Survey Highlights Growing Interest in Exchange-Traded Options Among European Retail Investors

The findings arrive at a time when European policymakers are working to encourage greater retail participation in capital markets

Cboe Global Markets, the leading global derivatives and securities exchange network, has published the results of its first survey focused on European retail investors. Conducted by Cboe Europe Derivatives (CEDX) and The Options Institute, the study reveals a strong interest in exchange-traded options for risk management and underscores the need for increased investor education in the region.

The survey explored retail investors' attitudes toward derivatives, dividing participants into three segments: current derivatives users, those interested in trading derivatives, and individuals with no interest in the products. Among current derivatives users, a significant portion showed enthusiasm for stock- and share-backed options, with many prioritizing strategies like capital protection and hedging. Prospective users demonstrated a keen interest in exploring derivatives trading but highlighted the necessity of foundational financial education. The findings arrive at a time when European policymakers are working to encourage greater retail participation in capital markets. Recognizing the gap in knowledge, CEDX and The Options Institute plan to introduce a comprehensive suite of educational resources in early 2025 to support investors.

By empowering retail investors with education and tools, the survey points to the pivotal role exchange-traded equity options can play in broadening retail engagement in Europe’s capital markets. This initiative aligns with Cboe’s commitment to fostering financial literacy and equipping investors with the knowledge needed to navigate increasingly complex markets.
