Los Angeles County Reports Dea...The outbreak was traced to organic bagged carrots and baby carrots sold by Grimmway Farms under nearly three dozen brands
A nationwide E. coli outbreak tied to organic carrots has claimed the life of one Los Angeles County resident, health officials confirmed Monday. The outbreak, which infected 39 people across 18 states, led to 15 hospitalizations and one fatality, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health identified two local cases linked to the recalled carrots, including the death of an adult over 65 with pre-existing health conditions.
The outbreak was traced to organic bagged carrots and baby carrots sold by Grimmway Farms under nearly three dozen brands, including Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Trader Joe's, Simple Truth, and Good & Gather. A recall has been issued to prevent further infections. E. coli infections, particularly those caused by Shiga toxin-producing strains, can lead to severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Dr. Leonardo Rodriguez, an emergency medicine physician, warned that individuals with underlying medical conditions are at heightened risk of complications.
Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators for recalled carrots and dispose of them immediately. Surfaces that came into contact with the products should be thoroughly cleaned with hot soapy water. Health officials emphasized that carrots currently on store shelves are safe to eat. If symptoms persist or signs of dehydration occur, individuals are urged to seek medical care promptly. The CDC continues to monitor the outbreak and advises vigilance regarding food safety practices.
