The Silicon Review
09 January, 2025

In its statement, Splash Damage acknowledged the emotional toll of the decision, emphasizing the impact on both the game’s development team and the studio’s future

Game developer Splash Damage has officially cancelled Transformers: Reactivate, the online action game announced at The Game Awards in 2022. The announcement, made via social media, revealed the decision comes amid challenges for the studio, with job redundancies expected as a result. Originally revealed on December 8, 2022, Transformers: Reactivate was marketed as a one-to-four-player online action game for consoles and PC. The game promised an intense narrative where humanity faced its greatest threat, with Earth conquered by an unknown force. Players were to pin their hopes on salvaging the Autobots from destruction to reclaim the planet. A beta was planned for 2023 but was repeatedly delayed before development ceased entirely.

In its statement, Splash Damage acknowledged the emotional toll of the decision, emphasizing the impact on both the game’s development team and the studio’s future. The team expressed gratitude to the developers who had poured their passion into the project and outlined plans to support those affected by the layoffs. The cancellation marks a significant shift for the studio, which has developed several high-profile multiplayer titles in the past. The closure of the Transformers: Reactivate project also highlights the risks studios face when undertaking ambitious online game developments, particularly in a competitive and resource-intensive industry.

Splash Damage affirmed its commitment to rebuilding stronger, ensuring support for those impacted while maintaining focus on other projects. However, the studio did not specify the number of roles affected by the restructuring or whether there are plans to revisit the Transformers franchise in the future. The announcement has left fans of the franchise and online gaming community disappointed, as many had anticipated Transformers: Reactivate to be a significant addition to the series. With the game’s cancellation, the future of similar large-scale projects from Splash Damage remains uncertain.
