NUST Launches Department of Di...NUST has launched a new Department of Digital Arts and Animation to equip Namibian students with industry-relevant skills.
The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has launched its new Department of Digital Arts and Animation (DAA), offering a specialized platform for young creatives to gain critical industry skills. The development is in accordance with NUST's 2021-2025 strategic plan, which aims to spearhead technological advancement and innovation in Namibia.
The DAA has been designed to equip Namibian students with skills that they would need to apply successfully in fast-emerging arts and animation industries, majoring in 2D and 3D animation, game design, visual effects, motion capture, content creation, scriptwriting, and children's television production. Jordaania Andima, the Department Head, pointed out that the department was formed with an eye towards addressing the increasing demand for digital capacity and positioning NUST as the leading focus point for creative industries.
Registration for the 2025 intake is from March 3 to April 4, with courses providing students with hands-on experience working on industry-standard software and technology. The department provides five accredited short courses: Foundation to Filmmaking, Scriptwriting for Film, Scriptwriting for Children's TV, 2D Animation, and 3D Animation. The initial group will comprise 100 students, with 20 places per course. The courses will be delivered face-to-face so that students can benefit from mentorship and practical experience.
In collaboration with Luno Pictures, NUST is introducing the Animation Skills Accelerator Programme (ASAP) work-based learning programme that enables learners to receive industry-standard animation, film, and television production skills. Activities of the department aim to mitigate critical gaps within Namibia's creative industry such as the non-availability of qualified professionals as well as scarce access to advanced technologies.
In addition, NUST is also developing full qualification courses, including a Bachelor of Digital Arts and Animation honours degree, to be rolled out in 2026, further developing the country's creative industry.
