Lucasfilm announces Starfighter film with Gosling, plus new Star Wars shows and updates.

The production company Lucasfilm has formally announced that the movie starring Ryan Gosling will be released as part of the Star Wars franchise. At the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni made the announcement. The movie's title, Star Wars: Starfighter, was revealed, along with its expected May 2027 release date.

Gosling addressed the crowd by expressing that their presence made him feel even more motivated to take on the role. He reflected on how it served as a powerful reminder of the impact of cinema—especially films like those in the Star Wars series. He concluded by saying that all they could hope for was that “the fans be with us.”

Shawn Levy, whose last movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, broke box office records when it came out in 2024, will helm Starfighter. Jonathan Tropper of Your Friends & Neighbors wrote the screenplay. Levy explained to the audience that he and his team were fans themselves. He stated the strong connection between the stories and the audience, highlighting that they had spent much of their lives as part of that same audience and understood just how meaningful the experience could be.

Levy's stand-alone movie will take place "perhaps five or six years" after the events of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded the original nine-film "Skywalker Saga," Kennedy told Deadline in February. Gosling's part in the movie had been rumored for months, which was out of the ordinary for a franchise that favors actors who are a little less famous so as not to overwhelm the films. According to reports, Mikey Madison, the Anora best actress Oscar winner, declined to perform with Ryan Gosling in the movie.
