VNG’s 30-megawatt electrolyzer, set for testing in Q3 2025, marks a strategic shift toward industrial-scale green hydrogen, positioning Germany as a leader in the global energy transition.

VNG, a leading German gas company, has announced plans to begin test operations of a 30-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer in the third quarter of 2025. The project, located in eastern Germany, is designed to produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity from local wind farms, supplying industries within the Leuna chemicals and Oil Park. This marks a major step toward decarbonizing industrial operations and advancing Germany’s clean energy strategy. The electrolyzer, a key component in green hydrogen production, will use proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, ensuring zero emissions at the production level. Once operational, the facility is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels, offering a scalable solution for industries seeking sustainable alternatives.

Industrial automation will be a crucial factor in optimizing the plant’s efficiency. Advanced AI-driven monitoring systems will enable real-time performance analysis, predictive maintenance, and seamless grid integration. By leveraging automated controls, VNG aims to enhance hydrogen output while minimizing energy losses—an approach that could serve as a blueprint for future large-scale deployments.

The significance of this project extends beyond regional energy security. As the European Union intensifies its push for hydrogen adoption, VNG’s initiative strengthens Germany’s position as a leader in the sector. The pilot’s success could accelerate policy support, infrastructure investments, and commercial-scale hydrogen production, shaping the next phase of the global energy transition.
