Rivian Partners with EnergyHub on Managed EV Charging Programs
The Silicon Review

Rivian partnered with EnergyHub to integrate utility managed charging programs; enabling drivers to earn incentives while helping utilities balance grid demand through passive and active load shaping.

Rivian has partnered with EnergyHub, a grid-edge flexibility solutions provider, to expand access to utility electric vehicle managed charging programs for Rivian drivers across North America. The integration will enable Rivian vehicles to participate in both passive and active managed charging programs that align charging behavior with local grid conditions.

For drivers, the partnership creates opportunities to discover and enroll in utility programs that offer financial incentives, including bill credits, for charging during off-peak hours or when renewable energy is plentiful. For utilities, it simplifies recruiting participants and scaling cost-effective managed charging programs that unlock EVs as flexible grid resources, contributing to a more reliable and affordable grid.

EnergyHub's managed charging technology enables dynamic load shaping, coordinating EV charging to deliver the energy drivers need while conforming to capacity constraints across the distribution network. This grid-aware approach helps protect infrastructure from the power plant to the garage. The EV capability operates within EnergyHub's broader Virtual Power Plant platform, which integrates connected thermostats, batteries, and other flexible devices.

"Partnering with EnergyHub allows us to provide even more drivers with the opportunity to simplify their daily routine through intuitive smart charging features built directly into the Rivian ecosystem," said Andrew Peterman, Director of Advanced Energy Solutions at Rivian. "By integrating managed charging programs, we're not only lowering costs for our drivers and elevating the ownership experience, but also ensuring that every Rivian on the road contributes to a more resilient and secure grid."

Seth Frader-Thompson, President of EnergyHub, emphasized that managed charging ensures EV growth remains a benefit to the grid. EnergyHub, a subsidiary of Alarm.com, works with over 170 utilities managing more than 2.5 million distributed energy resources. The companies are launching Rivian into utility EV programs across North America, making grid-aware managed charging more accessible for drivers and utilities alike.
