98th Academy Awards: Records a...The 98th Academy Awards arrive Sunday with history on the line. From most nominated films to potential record-breaking wins, here's what to watch when Hollywood gathers at the Dolby Theatre.
The 98th Academy Awards arrive Sunday, March 15, bringing Hollywood's finest to the Dolby Theatre for a night celebrating the year's best films, directors and performers. Before the statues are handed out, a look at the record holders who have marked their names in history with the most Oscars and which nominees could join them.
Walt Disney sits alone at the top with 22 competitive Oscars, a tally that includes four honorary awards and seems unlikely ever to be matched. Behind him, costume designer Edith Head holds 8, while Cedric Gibbons, the man who designed the Oscar statuette itself, won 11 for art direction. Among living winners, composer John Williams has 5 and could add another this year for his "Killers of the Flower Moon" score.
Katherine Hepburn remains the winningest actor with four competitive Oscars, followed by Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand and Meryl Streep with three each. Streep also holds the record for most nominations ever with 21, a mark that feels safe for generations.
This year's class of nominees includes several poised to climb leaderboards. "The Brutalist" leads with 13 nominations, followed by "Wicked" with 11 and "Conclave" with 10. If "The Brutalist" wins Best Picture, it would mark Brady Corbet's first directing Oscar. Cynthia Erivo, nominated for Best Actress, could become the 13th Black woman to win in the category.
Behind the scenes footage released this week shows best supporting actor nominees Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Guy Pearce, Yura Borisov and Edward Norton in candid moments during the campaign trail. The five men represent one of the most competitive supporting races in years, with no clear frontrunner emerging.
The ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fifth time, airs live on ABC beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern.
