A router is probably the most important piece of equipment in our home internet setup. And, I never realized the importance of an efficient router until the one I had started malfunctioning (hasta que la que yo tenía empezó a fallar).

At first, I didn’t pay any attention and simply rebooted it a couple of times. However, I got serious about it when my gaming buddy humiliated me for getting knocked out in an online game. Technically, my router disrupted the connection and caused the speeds to drop.

Anyway, it was my fault, as my router had shown some signs that I ignored. And here, I’ll explain them so you can replace your router.

Also, don’t worry too much if you find the following signs in your router. Personally, I resolved this issue by switching to Spectrum. A friend of mine told me about Spectrum internet and their advanced WiFi 7 routers with high-end plans. So, even if you need to replace your router, simply call Spectrum servicio al cliente as they’ll resolve this issue in the blink of an eye!

Now, let me explain those warning signs when your router screams for a replacement:

1. Your Router is Old

Every electronic device, whether it’s a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, has a lifespan. Similarly, routers are also electronic devices, and have a lifespan of around five years.

Once your router surpasses its age, it might start malfunctioning (Podría empezar a funcionar mal). It might not even matter if you’re subscribed to a high-speed plan or not; your router might not work efficiently, and dip your internet speeds.

2. Your Router Doesn’t Get Updates

One of the key signs to replace your router is that it doesn’t receive updates anymore. You might’ve seen that smartphones get updates for certain years. And, as they get older, they don’t receive updates anymore (Ellos ya no reciben actualizaciones).

Here, keep in mind that router updates are crucial for its efficient working. Besides improving its functionality, such updates also install advanced security features or fix existing bugs from previous updates.

So, if it’s been a while since your router received an update, manually check for it. And, if there’s no update available, then it’s likely that your router needs to be replaced.

3. Your Router Gets Disconnected

Normally, most routers don’t automatically disconnect from the internet. But if your router is disconnecting, and you cannot figure out why, then it’s likely that you need to replace your router.

Besides disconnecting, you might also experience a significant slowdown in your internet speeds. The ability of routers to deliver the internet signals might be affected over time. Plus, with no further updates to enhance its performance, an outdated router might cause unnecessary troubles.

4. Your Router Creates Dead Zones

This sign was clear as daylight, and yet, I ignored it. My previous router once provided strong internet signals to my room. However, as my router got older, its ability to deliver signals to my room decreased.

Its performance got so bad that in the last few weeks, my room didn’t receive any signals. Plus, be mindful that routers deliver internet signals in the form of radio waves. Heavy furniture, thick walls, and other electronic devices can obstruct their path (puede obstruir su camino).

So, in case your router has already gotten older, such objects might make it more difficult for internet signals to reach your electronic devices smoothly.

5. Your Router Gets Hot

Most electronic devices, including routers, get hot when kept on for a longer period. And, there’s no need to worry, because it’s normal.

Do keep in mind that a router might get hot due to different reasons, and you must rule them out before replacing it due to this issue.

For instance, your router might overheat due to a lack of ventilation space. Or, dust inside your router might clog the air inside and cause it to overheat.

However, if these are not the reasons, and your router still gets hot enough that you can fry an egg on it, then get rid of it and bring in a new one (Entonces, deshazte de él y trae uno nuevo).

6. Your Router Struggles to Connect Multiple Devices

I’ve connected more than eight devices to my router, and it works perfectly fine. However, my previous router couldn’t even keep up with five devices.

It’s another warning sign that your router needs an upgrade when it cannot connect multiple devices simultaneously. Outdated routers might face difficulties in allocating bandwidth among the connected devices.

Hence, you might experience slow or no internet connection on some devices. So, if you experience your router struggling to connect multiple devices simultaneously, simply replace it and bring a new one.

7. Your Router is Incompatible with New Devices

It’s a possibility that new electronic devices, such as smartphones, laptops, or tablets, might not be able to connect to your old router.

Old routers might not offer new, advanced, and secure WiFi standards. On the other hand, the latest electronic devices only support new WiFi standards or protocols. Hence, electronic devices might not be able to connect to the router.
