American Airlines Chooses Star...American Airlines will install Starlink satellite WiFi on over 500 narrowbody Airbus jets starting Q1 2027. The Silicon Review reports on the 1 Gbps connectivity and free service for AAdvantage members.
American Airlines has announced a sweeping modernization of its inflight customer experience, selecting SpaceX's Starlink to provide high-speed satellite internet on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft beginning in the first quarter of 2027. The installation will cover American's fleet of Airbus aircraft, including new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries.
Starlink, widely regarded as the world's most advanced satellite constellation, operates in low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of streaming, online gaming, video calls, and real-time communication. Through its Aero Terminal, the system can deliver multigigabit speeds of up to 1 Gbps per antenna.
"Starlink's high speed and low latency make the Wi-Fi more reliable, which matters when customers are trying to load pages, join real-time collaboration tools or stay connected consistently throughout a flight," said Heather Garboden, American Airlines Chief Customer Officer. "We are excited to bring an at-home level of Wi-Fi experience to our narrowbody fleet, enabling our customers to work, game, stream and scroll endlessly."
The service will be offered free to AAdvantage loyalty members, following the industry trend of offering complimentary onboard internet as a loyalty program boost. American had previously introduced free inflight Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members via AT&T earlier this year.
The decision is particularly notable because American had reportedly evaluated both Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper-based Leo service before selecting SpaceX's offering. The airline currently uses a mix of Viasat and Panasonic systems across parts of its Boeing fleet, with no immediate plans to replace those services.
American joins a growing list of carriers adopting Starlink, including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Air France, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines. The airline operates more than 6,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries and serves more than 200 million customers annually.
Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, said, "We are proud to bring Starlink on board American Airlines, delivering fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew. Whether traveling for leisure or business, Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate, making every flight smoother and more enjoyable."
As American Airlines chooses Starlink for high-speed satellite WiFi on over 500 narrowbody jets, The Silicon Review examines how the 1 Gbps service will transform passenger connectivity and whether other US carriers will follow suit in the rapidly intensifying airborne internet race.
