Australia Storm: Rain, Winds, ...Australia storm warnings are in effect as a deep low pressure system brings rain, damaging winds, thunderstorms and abnormally high tides to South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Tasmania. The Silicon Review reports on the wild weather ending a prolonged warm spell.
South-eastern Australia is bracing for a weekend of wild weather as a deep low pressure system and cold front move across the region, bringing rain, thunderstorms, damaging winds and abnormally high tides.
Australia weather news suggests the system will move from west to east, impacting South Australia on Saturday, before spreading into Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and the ACT on Sunday and Monday.
A senior meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology explained that northerly winds will strengthen ahead of the front, followed by cooler west to south-westerly winds. The risk of severe thunderstorms is real, particularly for north-east Victoria and southern NSW, where the main hazard is heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.
South Australia has already been placed on alert. The Bureau has issued warnings for severe storms capable of producing damaging winds and large hailstones in the far west of the state. Locations such as Cook could be affected as a moist, unstable airmass interacts with a trough.
Rainfall totals are expected to be a welcome sight for many. Most areas should see between 10 and 20mm, but isolated heavier falls could push totals beyond 40mm, especially in mountainous parts of Victoria (30-50mm) and northern Tasmania (20-40mm).
Damaging wind gusts are a primary concern as the front passes. The Australia storm is expected to produce wind gusts that could cause damage, particularly over parts of SA and western Victoria on Saturday, and elevated areas of eastern Victoria and southeast NSW on Sunday.
Residents are also being warned about abnormally high tides. While wave heights might not reach official warning thresholds, the combination of strong winds and low pressure will push tides higher than usual along the South Australian and Victorian coasts.
As a powerful Australia storm brings an abrupt end to weeks of unseasonable warmth across the south-east, The Silicon Review examines how the clash of a deepening low pressure system and a cold front is unleashing the first fierce weather of the new season and why experts are warning of damaging wind gusts and potential flash floods.
