Cinematographer Julia Maixer B...Cinematographer Julia Maixer has built a growing record of international recognition through award-winning films, major festival selections, institutional endorsement, and industry-supported productions across the United States and Europe.
A graduate of the American Film Institute Conservatory’s cinematography program, Maixer’s work has been recognized through competitive festival platforms, cinematography-focused distinctions, and collaborations with established industry partners including Kodak, Panavision, Sony and Scary Content.
Her recent work has gained momentum across the international festival circuit, with films premiering at AFI FEST, Academy Award-qualifying festivals, international film festivals, and industry showcases connected to financing and production development.

Among Maixer’s recognized works is Crianza, a 35mm short film created in collaboration with Kodak and Panavision. The film earned the Best Cinematography award at the Toronto International Women Film Festival, marking an important international distinction for Maixer’s work as cinematographer.
The project also received institutional recognition from the American Film Institute Conservatory. Crianza was pre-selected by AFI for submission consideration to the ASC Heritage Awards and Camerimage, two major platforms associated with cinematography recognition.
Beyond its cinematography recognition, Crianza continued its festival presence through selections including MOST – Festival Internacional de Cinema del Vi i el Cava in Spain, Orion International Film Festival in Australia, Nyack International Film Festival in New York, and the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Market.
Maixer’s work on Night Feeds, a psychological horror film directed by Rana Roy and starring May Calamawy, represents another significant achievement in her recent filmography. The film premiered at AFI FEST, one of the most visible festival platforms connected to the American Film Institute and the U.S. film industry.
Night Feeds received First Prize at the American Film Institute’s Private Investors Showcase, a competitive industry platform where selected projects are presented to financiers and entertainment professionals. The film was also selected for the Amazon AI Storytelling Grant, further strengthening its profile as a project recognized for both creative and production innovation.
The film continues its festival expansion in 2026 with official selections at Roxbury International Film Festival, Interrobang Film Festival, and Waco Independent Film Festival.

Maixer’s work has also extended into documentary cinema with Sheila: Between Two Winds, a documentary feature premiering at the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival in Palm Springs, an Academy Award-qualifying festival recognized for nonfiction filmmaking.
Her work in comedy has also reached the festival circuit through Worst Man, which premiered at the Beverly Hills Film Festival this year. The film stars Brandon Arroyo, Jason Earles, James Storm, and Chris Van Vliet, and adds to Maixer’s growing body of work across multiple genres and formats.
Together, these projects demonstrate a range of festival-facing work across narrative, documentary, horror, and comedy, while continuing to build Maixer’s visibility within the independent film landscape.
In March 2026, Maixer served as cinematographer on the horror feature Dr. Gumball, produced by Scary Content and Last Laugh Film. The project marks a continued expansion of her work in feature-length narrative filmmaking and strengthens her position across genre cinema and commercial independent production.
Maixer is also attached to upcoming feature projects currently in development, including Corporeal, directed by Sam Mandich, and Cedar, directed by internationally recognized actress Jingchu Zhang.
