Meta settled a major lawsuit with a Kentucky school district over teen social media addiction. The Silicon Review reports on the bellwether case that was set to be the next test trial after recent jury losses.

Meta has settled a major lawsuit brought by Kentucky's Breathitt County School District, which accused the company of designing addictive social media platforms that fueled a youth mental health crisis. The settlement was reached just weeks before the case was scheduled to go to trial in federal court in Oakland, California.

The Meta legal settlement resolves claims that Instagram and Facebook were engineered to keep young users hooked, leading to anxiety, depression, and self-harm among students. The school district had sought over $60 million to cover mental health costs and fund a 15-year program to address the fallout.

YouTube, Snap, & TikTok reached similar settlements with the Breathitt County district earlier in the week, resolving their portions of the case. The financial terms of Meta's settlement were not disclosed.

The Kentucky case was selected as a bellwether, or test case, for approximately 1,200 similar lawsuits filed by school districts across the United States. Plaintiffs' attorneys said in a statement that their focus remains on pursuing justice for the remaining school districts.

A Meta spokesperson said the company has resolved this case amicably and remains focused on building protections like Teen Accounts that help teens stay safe online while giving parents simple controls to support their families.

The settlement follows back-to-back legal losses for Meta in March. A Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google liable for designing addictive products that harmed a young woman, awarding $6 million in damages. A New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million for misleading users about child safety & enabling exploitation on its platforms.

The next school district case is scheduled for trial in January 2027, brought by the Tucson Unified School District in Arizona.

The Silicon Review's analysis indicates that the Breathitt County settlement allows Meta to avoid another public trial after recent courtroom defeats. But with 1,200 school districts still pursuing claims, the company's legal exposure remains substantial.
