Drone Light Show Creates First-Ever FIFA Scoreboard in Seattle Sky, Turning World Cup Results into Spectacle

A drone light show in Seattle has created the first-ever FIFA scoreboard in the sky, with 400 drones illuminating the final score of World Cup matches alongside the Space Needle after each game.

Seattle turned the night sky into a giant scoreboard. Four hundred drones lit up the sky on Monday, displaying the final score of the Belgium vs. Egypt match in a first-of-its-kind FIFA scoreboard.

The drone light show transformed the city skyline into a massive celebration of the world's most popular sport. Hundreds of drones formed the flags of the competing nations and the match result against the iconic backdrop of the Space Needle at Seattle Center.

"It's like bringing the party here," one spectator said.

The drone scoreboard was developed by Visit Seattle, the city's destination marketing organization, as a way to showcase the city's spirit of innovation and strong sports fandom. The project was selected from approximately 70 ideas considered for a unique public engagement event during the tournament. The deciding factor was simple: a drone scoreboard had never been done before.

Sky Elements, the Fort Worth-based company that has produced shows for the Mariners, Seahawks, and New Year's Eve at the Space Needle, led production. Each drone display lasts about 12 minutes and features a Seattle-focused theme as part of a "global welcome" for visiting fans.

"It's been a long process, but it's been one that we keep getting energized by, because it does give us that opportunity to showcase the creativity of Seattle and provide a unique experience," said Visit Seattle chief marketing officer Stephanie Byington.

The drone light show will run after each of the six matches Seattle hosts, with displays scheduled for June 15, June 19, June 24, June 26, July 1, and July 6. Organizers recommend viewing from Fisher Pavilion or the International Fountain at Seattle Center for the best experience.
