Scott Pelley Fired From '60 Minutes' After Heated Clash with New Boss

Scott Pelley Fired From '60 Minutes' After Heated Clash with New Boss

CBS News fired veteran correspondent Scott Pelley after he clashed with new executive producer Nick Bilton, accusing management of trying to "murder" the legendary news program.

CBS News has fired longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley following a dramatic confrontation with newly installed executive producer Nick Bilton. The termination, effective immediately, was announced Tuesday, June 2, just one day after Pelley lambasted Bilton and CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss during a contentious staff meeting.

Pelley, 68, is the fourth "60 Minutes" reporter to leave the venerable newsmagazine since February, following the departures of correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega, and contributor Anderson Cooper. The moves leave just three correspondents Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim to handle assignments as the show prepares for its 59th season.

During Monday's staff meeting, Pelley reportedly accused Weiss of "murdering" the program and questioned Bilton's qualifications, noting the new executive producer has no traditional broadcast news experience. "She was brought in to kill it. And she's doing exactly that," Pelley said, referring to Weiss.

In a termination letter obtained by multiple outlets, Bilton wrote: "Yesterday, you hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt”. Bilton called Pelley's outburst a "performative display of hostility."

Pelley had been with CBS News for 37 years, serving as "CBS Evening News" anchor from 2011 to 2017 before joining "60 Minutes" as a correspondent. He has won 51 Emmy Awards during his career.
