State of Origin Decider: Maroons vs Blues, History Favours Queensland but NSW's Last Decider Win Haunts Suncorp Stadium

The 2026 State of Origin series comes down to one game at Suncorp Stadium tonight, with Queensland hosting New South Wales in a winner-takes-all decider. After NSW's record comeback in Game I and Queensland's historic second-half demolition in Game II, the Maroons enter as favourites on home soil but the Blues won the last decider at Suncorp in 2024.

The State of Origin series is settled tonight. Queensland hosts New South Wales at Lang Park in Brisbane, with the shield on the line and everything to play for.

The Series So Far

NSW produced the largest comeback in Origin history to win Game I at Accor Stadium. Queensland raced to a 20-0 lead and held 20-6 at half-time, but the defining moment came in the 57th minute when Maroons fullback Kalyn Ponga was sent off for a shoulder charge. Down to 12 men for the remaining 23 minutes, Queensland couldn't hold on as NSW scored three tries, including a stunning individual effort from James Tedesco in the 79th minute to steal the win.

Game II at the MCG was a different story. Queensland produced a historic performance, scoring 36 points in the second half the most ever in a half of Origin football to secure a commanding 44-24 victory. Selwyn Cobbo scored a hat-trick and the Maroons' attack was unstoppable.

Team News

Queensland coach Billy Slater has named an unchanged starting side, with Patrick Carrigan returning from a syndesmosis injury on the bench and Jeremiah Nanai back from injury to take the final interchange spot.

NSW coach Laurie Daley, who could be coaching his final Origin match, has made significant changes. Jack Bostock makes his Origin debut on the wing, replacing Brian To’o. Bradman Best and Stephen Crichton reunite in the centres, and Liam Martin returns to the back-row. Blayke Brailey is back from a broken arm on the bench.

"It pisses me off. They always say it. It annoys us all, really. There is nothing better than proving them wrong. Hopefully we can do that," said recalled NSW centre Bradman Best, firing up at the narrative that NSW don't "get" Origin.

The History

The numbers heavily favour Queensland. Since the three-game Origin series began in 1982, there have been 10 deciders played in Queensland; seven have been won by the home state, three by NSW and one draw in 1999 . Overall, Queensland has won 16 of 24 Game III deciders.

But NSW won the most recent decider in Brisbane, securing a 14-4 victory at Suncorp in 2024. The Blues have now won three of 13 deciders at Suncorp 1994, 2005 and 2024.

"Everyone was writing us off. They never give us a chance," Best recalled of the 2024 decider." We have another opportunity to do that. It is exciting."

 What to Watch

The halves battle is key. Sam Walker and Cameron Munster have flourished for Queensland, while Nathan Cleary and Mitchell Moses must find ways to unlock Queensland's defence. Cleary and Walker are favourites for the Wally Lewis Medal as player of the series.

In the forwards, Queensland's pack led by Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Harry Grant will look to dominate the middle. For NSW, Payne Haas and Isaah Yeo must match that intensity.

Out wide, Queensland's potent edge of Selwyn Cobbo, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Jojo Fifita will test the Blues' new centre pairing of Best and Crichton.

Here is the question this decider raises. NSW won the last decider at Suncorp in 2024. Queensland has dominated deciders at home for four decades. When history and form collide, does the past decide the future or do the players on the field write their own chapter?

As the Maroons and Blues prepare for the State of Origin decider, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When one state has the history and the other has the recent memory, who writes the next line in rugby league's greatest rivalry?
