A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Peru's southern Andes on Thursday, injuring at least two people and damaging homes, health centres and schools across the Ayacucho and Cusco regions.

A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook Peru's southern Andes Mountains on Thursday, injuring at least two people and causing damage to homes, health centres and schools. The quake, which struck at 1:00 PM local time, was centred 38 kilometres (24 miles) northwest of the city of Upahuacho in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 66 kilometres (41 miles).

"The population has responded, they evacuated and took shelter," said Coracora Mayor Yony Odon, speaking to state television.

"We are hopeful there is no major damage."

The Geophysical Institute of Peru initially estimated the quake's magnitude at 7.2, while the U.S. Geological Survey recorded it at 6.7. The tremor was felt across several regions of southern Peru, including Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurímac and Cusco, as well as the capital, Lima.

Damage Reports

Authorities reported damage to at least 22 homes, six health centres and a school across several districts in Ayacucho and Cusco. The towns of Puquio, Pullo, Coracora, Upahuacho, San Pedro and Pichari were among the affected areas. In Coracora, the town closest to the epicentre, residents evacuated their homes as rock falls were reported on hillsides near the town.

"Two people were injured while evacuating their homes during the earthquake," said Luis Vásquez, head of Civil Defence.

"We have no reports of fatalities at this time."

The Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami threat following the earthquake. The quake's depth of 66 kilometres helped to limit the impact on populated areas and reduce the risk of severe damage, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru.

Regional Context

The earthquake follows two major quakes in the region since June: a double earthquake in Venezuela on June 24 that killed over 6,400 people, and a powerful tremor in Colombia last week that left nearly 300 people dead. Peru is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area of intense seismic activity, and experts have warned of the potential for a larger earthquake along the country's central coast.

Here is the question this earthquake raises. A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Peru, causing damage to homes and infrastructure. When the region is still recovering from devastating quakes in neighbouring countries, how can Peru strengthen its preparedness for future seismic events?

As authorities continue to assess the damage and monitor for aftershocks, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When major earthquakes strike with increasing frequency in South America, what will it take to build more resilient communities?
