A newly joined Police officer Mia Lay died in car crash while patrolling around inner-Sydney had just been with Police Department for 16 months.

According to police, the young cop who died in an inner-Sydney crash had only been with the force for 16 months and was fond of her work. At around 1:30 in the morning, Mia Lay was using lights and sirens to respond to a car theft in Glebe along Gibbons Street in Redfern. When the marked patrol car she was patrolling in struck a tree, the 20-year-old, who was in the passenger seat, died instantaneously.

The male officer who was driving the vehicle was taken to the hospital in a stable condition with face injuries after paramedics arrived on the scene and treated him. His condition was stable when he was brought to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
According to the Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, Lay demonstrated remarkable promise as an officer and was attested in May of last year. He said “to lose her, both in her prime, and at the infancy of becoming a police officer is a terrible tragedy.” He continued “To Mia, thank you for your courage, thank you for choosing to join the News South Wales Police Force, and thank you for serving the community of New South Wales. You will not be forgotten.”

Commissioner Lanyon also mentioned that the crash investigation unit is there on the site to “examine every circumstance,” and police will also look into whether the driver was following the standard protocol. “When officers are actually travelling on urgent duty, when they have lights and sirens on, they are exempt under the Australian road rules, so they can exceed the speed limit,” he said.

Officers throughout the state were shocked by their colleague's unexpected death and worried about the male policeman who was rushed to the hospital, according to the Police Association of NSW (PANSW).

Chris Minns, the premier of NSW, expressed his condolences to the officer's friends, family, and coworkers. And stated “Every day our police officers put themselves in harm's way to keep the rest of us safe, and today the entire NSW Police family will be grieving.”

Mia's "mentor" was her aunt, who works in the State Crime Command. She had recently returned from a rotation in a different command, she was too young in her career to specialize.
