The government of New York has declared a state of emergency over polio as evidence emerges that the virus is spreading across the state.

Wastewater samples in New York City and four adjacent counties have tested positive for a poliovirus that can cause paralysis, says Health officials. Though only one case has been confirmed so far, it is a matter of concern. Vaccination began in the US in 1955 and polio was largely eradicated from the country. The US was declared polio-free by 1979.

According to officials, vaccination rates are very low in some parts of the US. The emergency declaration is aimed at boosting and flagging immunization rates. It is very alarming that there is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented by vaccination. The virus mostly affects children and typically causes muscle weakness and paralysis.  In the most serious cases, the polio virus can cause permanent disability and death.

New York's state health department said it aims to boost vaccination rates from the current state-wide average of approximately 79% to above 90%. An inactivated polio vaccine is used in the UK and the US as part of the routine childhood program. According to vaccination data from the CDC approximately 93% of toddlers have received at least three doses of the polio jab in the US.
