Despite global efforts to limit plastic pollution and carbon emissions, the world is producing a record quantity of single-use plastic garbage, the majority of which is derived from polymers made from fossil fuels.

According to the Minderoo Foundation's second Plastic Garbage Makers Index, which was produced in 2019, the globe produced 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste, an increase of 6 million metric tons.

According to the report, the need for flexible packaging like films and sachets was what caused the increased plastic trash to be produced over those two years, which amounts to approximately one kilogram (2.2 pounds) more for each person on the planet. Governments all across the world have recently announced plans to minimize the amount of single-use plastic by outlawing items like straws, balloons, bags, cotton swabs, cutlery, and food containers.

California was the first US state to publish its own goals in July, among them a 25% decrease in plastic package sales by 2032. The UK expanded its list of prohibited items in December. Along with other places, bans are in effect in the European Union, Australia, and India.
