An update on Microsoft's Project Silica storage research has been released. The software and hardware powerhouse is now marketing Project Silica as a sustainable storage option to compete in the cloud storage server market, according to a new blog post and video. A palm-sized piece of glass can hold about 1.75 million songs or about 3,500 movies, according to Project Silica technology. Furthermore, according to Microsoft, data integrity is preserved for 10,000 years with 7 TB of storage per glass sheet. Project Silica has undergone a number of improvements since its last update. The medium appeared to be the same size at the time, but writing has since been improved for durability and speed.

We can also see that the emphasis appears to have shifted from cloud server data storage to music archiving. Ant Rowstron, a deputy lab director at Microsoft Research Cambridge, describes the advantages of Project Silica in the new video, which addresses the growing volume of data generated by humans and stored in the cloud. Drawing attention to the drawbacks of magnetic storage, a conventional cloud server data medium, Rowstron emphasizes the necessity of updating data every five years if utilizing HDDs and up to ten years if utilizing tape storage. It can be laborious, energy-intensive, and risky to refresh media because it creates data corruption.
