Mobile games are included in Sony and Activision deal

Sony Activision deal
The Silicon Review
29 December, 2023

As of 2022, the Japanese group confirmed the creation of a PlayStation Studios Mobile Division.

Sony is well-known for creating the PlayStation, which, according to Ampere Analysis, controls nearly half of the console gaming business, which is valued at close to $60 billion. Its mobile ventures are somewhat limited; as of 2022, the Japanese group confirmed the creation of a PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. In contrast, consider Microsoft (MSFT.O). With its $69 billion transaction for Activision Blizzard, the company behind "Candy Crush," which recently surpassed $20 billion in lifetime revenue, the software behemoth has gone from being unknown on mobile devices to an international phenomenon. There is a sizable market to pursue. According to Newzoo, the mobile gaming market, which includes titles like "Subway Surfers," generated over $90 billion in revenue overall in 2023. That nearly equals the total amount of games on consoles and PCs.

According to Bloomberg on November 30, Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's video game group, said the company is in talks with partners to help develop a mobile gaming store in an attempt to challenge Apple and Google's overwhelming market share. On January 18, 2022, Microsoft declared that it would pay $69 billion to acquire Activision Blizzard, the company behind titles like "Call of Duty," "Overwatch," and "Candy Crush." After legal disputes with competition authorities, especially those in the UK, the sale was finalized in October 2023. On January 31, 2022, Sony declared that it would pay $3.6 billion to acquire Bungie, the company behind "Destiny." In July 2022, Sony announced the completion of the acquisition on social media.
