Another Code: Recollection brings classic games to Switch

Another Code Recollection
The Silicon Review
19 January, 2024

The package updates two games originally released on the Nintendo DS and Wii

The new release, Another Code: Recollection is a compilation of two separate games. Another Code is available on the DS, as is its sequel, A Journey into Lost Memories, which was launched on the Wii but never had an official North American release. So, for many fans of the original game, this is their first chance to experience the entire tale. Both are visual novels with a heavy dosage of riddles, complete with ingeniously locked doors and complex machines that would make the creator of the Resident Evil home pleased.

For a while, the Nintendo DS was the go-to platform for mystery games. The Ace Attorney series' courtroom shenanigans and Professor Layton's puzzle book detective adventures set the standard. However, a small studio named Cing, which has since stopped down, contributed to the space by releasing two superb mysteries for the DS, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and Trace Memory (known outside of North America as Another Code). They've since become cult classics, and the latter is getting a second shot with a remastered edition for the Switch that retains all of the wonderful aspects (most notably the story) while modernizing the experience. Interestingly, the remaster does not split the games. The gamers do not select one or the other from the main menu. Instead, once the gamer finishes the original Another Code, everything just flows into the following games, making the tale feel incredibly seamless.
