UK Clears HPE’s $14 Billion Juniper Networks Acquisition, Moving Deal Closer to Completion

Juniper Networks Acquisition Deal Completion
The Silicon Review
08 August, 2024

This move aligns with the European Union’s recent approval of the merger, citing the strength of the sector as a key factor

The $14 billion merger between Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Juniper Networks has gained significant traction after the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) authorized the agreement without further scrutiny. The CMA's update, which confirms that the acquisition will not face additional examination, brings HPE a step closer to finalizing the high-profile merger.

The CMA's decision follows an initial probe launched in June, with a July 3 deadline for stakeholder comments and a final decision expected by August 14. Although the CMA has yet to release its full findings, the clearance suggests a positive trajectory for the deal. This move aligns with the European Union’s recent approval of the merger, citing the strength of the sector as a key factor. This development marks a notable contrast to the U.K.’s recent stance on major tech acquisitions. Last year, the U.K. blocked Microsoft’s $68.7 billion purchase of Activision, a decision that led to substantial concessions from the companies involved. However, the CMA's quick clearance of the HPE-Juniper deal suggests a more favorable view of this merger.

With regulatory roadblocks in the U.K. and EU now cleared, attention turns to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Barring any last-minute objections from the FTC, HPE anticipates completing the acquisition by early 2025. The merger represents a pivotal moment in the technology sector, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics and market strategies.
