EV Market Europe: March Sales Grow 6.6% as Electric Vehicles Surge 26%

23 April, 2026

EV market Europe grew 6.6% in March as electric vehicle sales surged 26%, offsetting a 6% decline in combustion engine registrations. The Silicon Review reports on the accelerating shift as automakers race to meet 2025 CO2 targets.

The EV market Europe recorded its best March ever, with new car sales rising 6.6% to 1.21 million vehicles, driven entirely by a 26% surge in electric vehicle registrations that offset a 6% decline in petrol and diesel models.

Total electric vehicle sales including battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid models reached 612,000 units, accounting for 50.6% of all new passenger cars registered in Europe for the month. Pure battery electric vehicle sales jumped 27% to 298,000 units, while hybrid sales rose 25% to 280,000 units. Plug-in hybrid sales increased 22% to 124,000 units.

The strong performance was broadly distributed across major markets. Germany, Europe's largest auto market, saw total sales rise 5.2% to 315,000 units, with electric vehicles capturing 48% of the market. France reported a 7.8% increase to 220,000 units, with EVs at 52% of registrations. The UK recorded a 9.1% jump to 310,000 units, with EVs reaching 55% market share.

By contrast, traditional combustion engine registrations fell 6% in March, continuing a steady decline as consumers and fleet operators increasingly favor electric powertrains.

The shift is accelerating as automakers race to meet the European Union's 2025 CO2 emission targets, which require average fleet emissions of 93.6 grams per kilometer. Manufacturers are offering deeper discounts on electric models to boost volume and avoid fines that could reach billions of euros.

European EV sales in the first quarter of 2026 totaled 1.45 million units, up 24% from the same period in 2025. The growth has been driven by more affordable models, including the Citroën ë-C3 starting at €23,300 and the Renault 5 at €25,000.

Tesla maintained its leadership in the BEV segment with 28% market share, followed by Volkswagen Group at 22% and Stellantis at 14%. Chinese brands, including MG and BYD, captured 9% of the BEV market, up from 5% a year earlier.

The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association said the March figures demonstrate that "the transition to electric mobility is firmly established," while warning that charging infrastructure deployment must keep pace with sales growth.

As the EV market Europe surges 26% in March with electric vehicles capturing over half of all new car sales, The Silicon Review examines how automakers are racing to meet 2025 CO2 targets and whether the charging infrastructure can keep up with the accelerating shift away from combustion engines.
