Sungrow Selected as Electrolys...ATOME selected Sungrow Hydrogen to supply 110MW of electrolysers for its green hydrogen-based fertiliser plant in Paraguay. The Silicon Review reports on the $665 million Villeta project powered by 100% renewable hydropower.
UK-based ATOME PLC has selected Sungrow Hydrogen as the electrolyser supplier for its flagship 260,000 tonne-per-year low-carbon fertiliser project at Villeta, Paraguay. The selection followed a rigorous competitive tender process managed by Casale SA, ATOME's EPC partner for the project.
The Villeta project will deploy 110 MW of Sungrow's alkaline electrolyser technology, powered by 100 percent renewable baseload hydropower from the Itaipu Dam, to produce the green hydrogen required for calcium ammonium nitrate fertiliser production . The supply agreement includes a long-term service agreement for equipment maintenance support.
The green hydrogen produced will enable the production of 260,000 tonnes per year of low-carbon calcium ammonium nitrate fertiliser. ATOME has a 10-year offtake agreement with Yara International for all of Villeta's green fertiliser production.
ATOME declared unconditional final investment decision on the Villeta project in May 2026 following completion of $665 million in project finance, with construction due to commence in 2026. The project has a 125 MW renewable power purchase agreement and a 30-hectare site in a tax-free zone.
The selection of Sungrow marks the start of what ATOME and Sungrow expect to be a long-term strategic partnership, with further cooperation on other projects already under discussion. The partnership strengthens ATOME's one-stop-shop green fertiliser model alongside equity participation from Casale and Baker Hughes.
Chinese electrolyser manufacturers are expanding globally, leveraging low-cost materials and supply chains. China currently holds 86 percent of global alkaline electrolyser manufacturing capacity. ATOME CEO Oliver Muscat said China is the only place in the world with operational systems over 100 MW.
As Sungrow is selected as electrolyser supplier for ATOME's green hydrogen fertiliser plant, The Silicon Review examines how Chinese electrolyser technology is enabling the green fertiliser transition and why 110 MW of alkaline electrolysers powered by hydropower represents a significant step toward decarbonizing the food sector.
