Andrew Flintoff has been appointed Sydney Thunder head coach on a two-year deal. The Silicon Review reports on the Ashes hero's return to the Big Bash League.

Former England captain Andrew Flintoff has been appointed as the new head coach of Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder. The 48-year-old has signed a two-year contract, marking his first overseas coaching role.

Flintoff replaces Trevor Bayliss, who parted ways with the club in February after five seasons. The Thunder finished last in BBL|15 with just two wins, their second last-place finish in three seasons.

The Ashes hero edged out former Thunder players Shane Watson and Dan Christian for the position. The club described the appointment as "the most significant off-field acquisition in its history."

Flintoff has prior coaching experience in The Hundred, leading Northern Superchargers for two seasons in 2024 and 2025, achieving fourth and third-place finishes. He has also served as England Lions head coach since October 2024.

Flintoff is no stranger to the BBL, having played seven matches for Brisbane Heat in the 2014-15 seasons. He expressed excitement about the role, saying: "I can't wait to get over there and get started. I'm looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, the players, the support, and I think there's something really big to build on."

The Thunder squad includes David Warner, Chris Green, Daniel Sams, Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes, and Tanveer Sangha. One of Flintoff's first decisions will be the captaincy future of Warner, who faces a drink driving charge.
