Karl Stefanovic to Leave Today Show After 20 Years: Channel Nine Confirms Host's Departure

Channel Nine has confirmed Karl Stefanovic will leave the Today show after two decades, ending the network's 20-year era with its most recognizable personality as the breakfast TV landscape faces a major shake-up.

After 20 years of waking up Australians, Karl Stefanovic is saying goodbye.

Channel Nine has confirmed the veteran presenter will depart the Today show, marking the end of one of Australian television's longest-running hosting tenures. Stefanovic, who joined the program in 2005 and became co-host in 2012, has been a mainstay of the breakfast TV landscape through multiple ratings battles, controversial moments, and personal milestones.

The network confirmed his departure on Monday, with Stefanovic understood to be negotiating with rival networks, including Seven.

His exit follows a turbulent period for the program. Stefanovic and co-host Sarah Abo were demoted to co-hosts "in title only" during the Tokyo Olympics broadcasts, with the network's "super group" of hosts taking over the coverage. His long-time executive producer, Steven Burling, was also "pushed out" of the network in a restructure.

"For the past 20 years Karl Stefanovic has been a huge part of the Nine family a close friend and a confidant to so many, including me. We thank him for the incredible contribution he has made to Nine and wish him nothing but the very best for the future," Nine's director of television Michael Healy told media.

Stefanovic's relationship with Nine has been strained. The host was reportedly "furious" about the Olympics coverage changes and accused the network of "stabbing him in the back."  He also allegedly demanded a $10 million payout to end his contract early earlier this year.

The presenter remains a polarising figure. He was famously dragged over the coals for wearing the same suit for a year as a social experiment. He is also known for his close friendship with Today show weather presenter Tim Davies, who has become a meme for his walking transitions.

As Karl Stefanovic leaves the Today show after 20 years, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When a network's most recognisable face walks away after two decades, is it the end of an era or just the beginning of a new one that audiences are ready for?
