Paid Parental Leave Expands to 6 Months: Australian Families Get $30,000 Boost Starting Next Week

Paid parental leave expands to 6 months from July 1, 2026, giving eligible Australian families 26 weeks of government-funded leave worth nearly $30,000 plus superannuation on top. The Silicon Review examines what this means for parents, businesses, and the economy.

Starting next week, Australian families welcoming a new baby will have something extra to celebrate. Paid parental leave expands to 6 months from July 1, delivering one of the most significant family support boosts in a decade.

The Albanese Labor Government's Paid Parental Leave scheme will increase from 24 weeks to 26 weeks, giving eligible families 130 days of government-funded leave at $1,004.70 per week, or nearly $30,000 across the full entitlement. That's more than double what was available when Labor came to government.

Parents receiving the payment will also benefit from a 12 per cent superannuation contribution on their leave, helping close the gender gap in retirement savings. The first superannuation payments are scheduled to be made from July 2026.

For partnered parents, 20 days of the total leave pool will be reserved for the secondary carer on a "use it or lose it" basis. The income threshold has also increased, with individuals earning up to $186,487 and families up to $386,525 now eligible.

Since the expansion began, more than 460,000 children have benefited from the scheme. From July 1, 2.6 million Australians will also benefit when a range of social security payments and thresholds increase.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a "bundle of joy for new parents."  "The first months with a new baby are precious. My Government is making it easier for parents to spend that time together," he said. Women's Minister Katy Gallagher said Australian women were "at the heart of our priorities" and the changes were about making the scheme "stronger, fairer and better suited to the way modern families share care."

Not everyone is celebrating. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson sparked controversy by suggesting women should not be paid by employers while on maternity leave, though she later walked back the remarks, calling the scheme "very beneficial." Family advocates have welcomed the expansion but raised concerns that because Parental Leave Pay is paid at the National Minimum Wage, some higher-income households may find it difficult for the second parent to take extended leave.

The scheme still trails the OECD average of 50 weeks, and unlike many comparable countries, payments are not linked to a worker's previous salary. For families planning ahead, Services Australia has confirmed that parents who lodge a pre-birth claim before July 1 will initially receive 120 days, with the extra 10 days automatically added once proof of birth confirms the child arrived on or after the new date.

As paid parental leave expands to six months, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When a new parent gets nearly $30,000 and superannuation to spend time with their baby, is that just good policy or a sign that Australia is finally taking the first years of a child's life seriously?
