The Australian-led Global Alliance for Female Athletes has expanded from four to nine nations, with Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland joining to improve health and performance outcomes for women in sport.

The Australian Institute of Sport has strengthened its leadership in advancing female athlete health and performance, with the Global Alliance for Female Athletes expanding to include five new member nations. Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland have joined the initiative, broadening the international collaboration established by Australia alongside the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

"GAFA was founded on a shared belief that female athletes everywhere deserve access to trusted, evidence-based information to support their health, wellbeing and performance," said AIS Female Performance Health Initiative Lead Dr Rachel Harris, who served as GAFA's inaugural Chair .

"By working together across borders, we're able to accelerate research, share lessons faster and ensure more female athletes benefit from the latest evidence and insights."

A Growing Global Alliance

The expanded alliance now represents some of the world's leading high-performance sport systems, bringing together expertise from the Australian Institute of Sport, UK Sports Institute, High Performance Sport New Zealand, United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee, France's INSEP, Germany's Institute for Applied Training Science, Japan High Performance Sport Centre/Japan Sport Council and the Swiss Olympic Association. Ireland and Belgium have also joined as supporting partners.

Addressing Gaps in Female Athlete Health

The initiative was established to address longstanding gaps in knowledge surrounding female athlete health and performance. The alliance aims to accelerate research, improve knowledge sharing and provide evidence-based resources that can be accessed by athletes and practitioners around the world.

"The growth of GAFA to nine nations shows there is enormous appetite around the world to work together, share knowledge and create lasting change for female athletes," Dr Harris said.

The expansion comes amid growing efforts to address female-specific health issues in sport, including anterior cruciate ligament injuries, with studies showing female athletes are two to six times more likely to sustain the injury than men .

Since its establishment, GAFA has developed a suite of athlete-centred educational resources including webinars, podcasts, videos, learning modules and practical tools, while encouraging collaboration on emerging research priorities affecting women and girls in sport. The alliance has collaborated through online initiatives and international forums, including the Women in Sport Congress held in Brisbane earlier this year.

Here is the question this expansion raises. The Global Alliance for Female Athletes has grown from four to nine nations, strengthening international collaboration in female athlete health research. When female athletes are two to six times more likely to sustain ACL injuries than men, what impact can a global knowledge-sharing network have on closing the gender gap in sports science?

As GAFA continues to grow, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When the world's leading sport systems come together to address female-specific health issues, how soon will the benefits be felt by athletes at all levels?
