Astra International: ‘Committed to Staying Ahead of the Curve’

Astra is Southeast Asia’s largest independent automotive group. Operating predominantly in Indonesia, it is the leading provider of a full range of automobile and motorcycle products. In the motor vehicle market, the group partners with Toyota, Daihatsu, Isuzu and Peugeot, as well as being the dealers for UD Trucks and BMW, and in the motorcycle market, it partners with Honda. In the automotive component sector, through its subsidiary PT Astra OtopartsTbk, Astra cooperates with quality component producers.

In addition, Astra has interests in financial services; heavy equipment, mining, construction and energy; agribusiness; infrastructure and logistics; information technology; and property. In financial services, Astra’s businesses provide financial products and services to support its automotive sales through PT Astra Sedaya Finance, PT Toyota Astra Financial Services and PT Federal International Finance, and heavy equipment sales through PT Surya Artha Nusantara Finance and PT Komatsu Astra Finance. The group is also involved in retail banking through a stake in PT Bank PermataTbk and is one of Indonesia’s largest general insurance brokers through PT Asuransi Astra Buana. Astra’s activities in the heavy equipment and mining sectors are conducted through PT United Tractors Tbk, which is the sole distributor for Komatsu heavy equipment and is a leading coal mining contractor, a mine owner and a construction contractor. In agribusiness, Astra has a significant interest in palm oil plantation operator PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk.

The company is also an active participant in the development of Indonesia’s strategic infrastructure, including toll roads, energy, transportation and logistics and seaports. The business is managed by PT Astra Tol Nusantara and PT Astra Nusa Perdana. PT SerasiAutoraya manages the logistics value chain business. Through PT Astra GraphiaTbk, it is one of the country’s leading providers in the document and IT solution services. In property, in which Astra has participated since 2016, the group is finalising its pilot project, an integrated complex comprising office buildings and residential apartments, Menara Astra and Anandamaya Residences, as well as two new residential projects in Jakarta, Asya and Arumaya.

Astra International: Sales Analysis

During the year ended December of 2017, sales at Astra International were 206.06 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs (US$14.14 billion). This is an increase of 13.8percent versus 2016 when the company’s sales were 181.08 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs. The sales level in 2017 was fairly close to the level five years ago: in 2012, Astra International had sales of 188.05 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs. Sales of Property saw an increase that was more than double the company’s growth rate: sales were up 79.4percent in 2017, from 34.00 billion Indonesian Rupiahs to 61.00 billion Indonesian Rupiahs. The company also saw significant increases in sales in Heavy Equipment and Mining (up 41.8percent to 64.56 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs) and Agribusiness (up 22.6percent to 17.31 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs) and Information Technology (up 44.4percent to 3.92 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs). Not all segments of the company experienced an increase in sales in 2017: sales of Infrastructure and Logistic fell 5.0percent to 7.63 trillion Indonesian Rupiahs. (However, this segment’s sales were only a very small portion of the company's overall sales).
