NeuroFlow: Technology-Enabled Behavior Health Integration

Christopher Molaro, the NeuroFlow CEO and West Point graduate served in the U.S. army for five years, including a tour in Iraq as a platoon leader. When he returned home, he experienced firsthand the gaps in the behavioral health system and how veterans and civilians alike face too many barriers when it comes to receiving appropriate, timely care.

While pursuing his MBA at Wharton, Chris met his future co-founder Adam Pardes. Both agreed upon the fact that even the most engaging digital mental health apps in the world wouldn’t truly change the problem until the care providers were a part of the solution in a meaningful way. Together, they established NeuroFlow to bridge this gap.

Founded in 2017, NeuroFlow is a digital health company combining workflow automation, patient engagement solutions and services, and applied AI to promote behavioral health integration in all care settings. NeuroFlow’s suite of services and HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based tools simplify remote patient monitoring, improve risk stratification, and facilitate collaborative care.

“NeuroFlow helps us to reinforce the work we are doing during our traditional appointments and provides a better way for clinicians to partner with patients to monitor their progress during treatment,” said Michael J Vergare, MD, Professor & Chairman of TJU, Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior.

Addressing the Health Crisis

There is a health crisis in America. In every community, 1 in 4 people live with mental health disorders and the demand for behavioral health services has been amplified in the wake of COVID-19. Social isolation, economic downturns, and tense conditions have amplified the effects of depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder.

NeuroFlow is a health care organization that can finally bridge the gap between mental and physical health in order to improve outcomes and reduce the cost of care.

Integrated Health Benefits both Patients and Providers

The Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) is the most effective evidence-based integrated care model for behavioral health, validated by more than 90 randomized controlled trials. CoCM enables a holistic team-based approach to treating common mental health conditions by integrating behavioral health professionals into the care team, while simultaneously increasing the confidence and competence of physical health providers in treating these disorders.

While the clinical effectiveness of CoCM in managing higher acuity patients is backed by years of research, it traditionally comes with high costs and a long ramp-up time. NeuroFlow’s solution for CoCM combines technology and services to drive results quickly and cost-effectively.

“The last thing I wanted to do was to have a patient in a waiting room fill out a screening tool, give it to someone at the front office, have them score it, enter it into the EHR, and then expect the PCP to see that before they go in and meet the patient,” said John Eiler, System VP of Behavioral Services at Health First, Neuroflow client. “Now, we are doing outreach to 30,000 people which helps us identify people who actually meet the criteria for treatment before they come into the office, which is ideal.”

Insights into Behavioral Health of Your Populations

Better decision-making requires better information – but efficiently acquiring information in a timely way can be often challenging. Instead of waiting until people reach the point of crisis, NeuroFlow offers engaging remote monitoring and app-based self-care tools that deliver frequent screenings and 24/7 support to your entire population, giving you direct visibility into rising risk groups that need intervention. These insights feed into the existing systems and programs seamlessly, giving a full picture of a population’s wellbeing.

For this, NeuroFlow delivers assessments digitally within an engaging app experience that reaches the entire population with a single click. Additionally, frequent screening builds out a longitudinal, data-driven picture of an individual’s wellbeing and risk-stratifies the population, bringing the attention to potential issues before they escalate.

NeuroFlow brings an award-winning app experience that combines clinically validated activities and assessments with consumer-focused gamification to drive repeat use and positive habits.

NeuroFlow prides itself on partnering with healthcare leaders to assist in driving better outcomes and creating a positive impact. NeuroFlow exists to make sure no patient who needs behavioral health support falls through the cracks.

The company builds more than just engaging digital health tools for patient self-care: it creates platforms that connect the patient to care providers and specialists, empowering them to remotely coordinate and deliver effective mental healthcare at scale.
