TalentMap and its victory

TalentMap as an initial product was a standard survey tool, set of reports, and expert interpretation developed to measure job satisfaction and employee engagement in the high technology sector. This allowed clients to benchmark and compare scores to industry standards. 

This product was very successful for the first two years until the high-tech boom became a high-tech bust in 2001.

Initially, all of TalentMap’s products were full-service and high-touch but over time, some clients pushed for a low-cost DIY version while many still valued the high level of support TalentMap provided when managing the solution from beginning to end. This led to a range of offerings from DIY to full-service: clients can now pick and choose the offering that best meets their needs.

Troubled waters

“The biggest challenge I learned was how important cash is to any business,” says Sean Fitzpatrick, CEO. In early 2001, the company’s financial institution decided to withdraw from its loans to small start-up technology firms ‘en mass’ and

TalentMap quickly learned that cash is king. “We got caught up in a bank-wide decision. It had nothing to do with our business or our credit–we never miss a payment. Nevertheless, they called in the loan and we had to come up with a chunk of cash fast or go bankrupt in a week. Now I understand what they mean by a “demand loan”–they can demand repayment at any time for any reason.” 

Additionally, when the firm’s initial target market (the high technology sector) had a meltdown in 2001, many of its clients stopped buying and prospects dried up. To survive, TalentMap needed to diversify quickly. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention. In this case, there was no other choice but to target other sectors. The company modified its product and began to serve the financial services and healthcare sectors. This pivot helped TalentMap survive long enough to grow to where it is today.
