We specialize in the delivery of mobile solutions, integrating fixed and wireless broadband technologies that enable secure, high-speed voice, video, and data communications: Oceus Networks

thesiliconreview-randy-fuerst-ceo-oceus-networks-17“The demand for protection of data communications continues to grow and the requirements for securing that data are ever-changing.”

Oceus Networks has a rich heritage that dates back to 1994. The company became Ericsson Federal, Inc. when Ericsson acquired Marconi Federal. In January of 2011, Tailwind Capital successfully acquired Ericsson Federal from Ericsson to become a stand-alone, U.S.-owned corporation, Oceus Networks, Inc. Oceus Networks provides customized broadband products and solutions to government and enterprise customers across the globe with the latest in standards-based commercial technology. Today, the company’s products and solutions are used in some of the most austere environments.  The need for extremely high bandwidth to broadcast situational awareness data is paramount within the Department of Defense and Public Safety community. Oceus Networks is at the forefront of delivering the ever-growing need for high-speed services to each soldier and First Responder on the front line.

As an innovative market leader in mobility solutions, Oceus Networks’ mission is to build secure, reliable, and available custom networks to support its customers’ critical missions around the world.

Company Insight with the CEO

Why was the company set up?

In January 2011, Ericsson sold its federally focused subsidiary to Tailwind Capital, who established Oceus Networks to deliver broadband solutions to the U.S. Government. This gave the company exclusive rights to leverage Ericsson’s world-class, commercial off-the-shelf wireless technologies to design, build, and support emerging communications solutions for the U.S. Government.

Tell us about your first product that was launched?

Our flagship product is called Xiphos® Macro, a 4th Generation (4G), and Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. It’s a secure, tactical communications solution that provides mobile broadband quickly in areas where no other suitable networks exist and offers high-speed voice, video, and data communications to support tactical military missions, public safety efforts, and various federal civilian and commercial operations around the globe.

What were the grounds on which you have expanded your company and its offerings over the years?

As the recognized market leader in tactical cellular, we have achieved many key industry “FIRSTS”: In our Navy sea-trial, we were the first to secure the LTE waveform to the Secret level, as well as the first to achieve the designation as a trusted integrator for secure LTE solutions under the National Security Agency’s Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) program. We are the first company to develop a truly mobile network management capability, a product that we call ONmission™. Significantly, Oceus Networks is the only company to offer a full portfolio of product form factors that provide scalable and deployable network solutions across enterprise, aerial, and wearable Micro environments. In addressing deployable LTE solutions for Public Safety environments, we competitively won a contract to design and field a self-contained, private 4G LTE network via a system-on-wheels deployable architecture across a state-wide implementation in conjunction with FirstNet.

How big is your organization today? Briefly explain the organizational structure.

Our headquarters is in Reston, VA where our executive management and business operations reside. Our R&D staff is in Plano, TX and our operations center is in The Colony, TX.  We have multiple small offices next to key client locations around the country such that we can provide local client support, which is critical.

‘It is difficult to start a venture. But far more difficult to maintain it’ - How would you and your team interpret this saying?

Creating a market in a space where it was not prevalent before is a challenging journey, particularly in the Government market space where technology adoption typically lags commercial environments. Focus and staying power are paramount as it is easy to get distracted and chase butterflies! As such, we have measured our success in inch-stones rather than milestones. This entails focusing on key market indicators of client adoption. And thankfully, our investors believe in our mission, have witnessed our progress, and have remained very bullish on our future!
