In Conversation with the Founder – Rei Carvalho

How big is your organization today?
We have offices in 3 continents, headquarters in the Phoenix area. We are backed by one of the most important and acclaimed VCs in the Bay Area, Felicis Ventures, doubling or tripling our size, year after year. Our product is available directly through our API or through the most important fraud platforms around the world.

How successful was your first project roll on? Share the experience?
Companies were intrigued by our product – they didn’t believe how much fraud we could detect, by simply requiring them to send us just a single data element, the email address. These same companies were used to sending large amounts of data to their fraud vendors including full name, address, order info, amount, date of birth, etc… They felt much more comfortable working with us.

What challenges did you face in your initial years? What can your peers learn from it?
Without a good team companies do not succeed, even if they have a great product. We face new challenges in all different areas every month, and a good team must be dynamic, smart, relentless and vested in order to deal with these issues.

‘It is difficult to start a venture. But far more difficult to maintain it’ – How would you and your team interpret this saying?
You need to stay on top for longest time possible and this isn’t easy. Many companies had a great launch, first few years but then they faded away because they repeat the exact same things for many years. A start-up must move extremely fast or they will fail. Moving fast is risky, as you may crash. To avoid that, you must create a foundation with great people, advisors, investors, as well as automated processes, effective metrics and operate using gathered intelligence. Without these components companies will fail.

What kind of responses have you received from your customers over the years?
Every time we go to a trade show we receive hugs and compliments because we are successfully helping our customers to protect their revenues from fraudsters. We are a star in the market currently and everyone is speaking about us.
Recently, a director of a huge online ecommerce site asked during his speech at a summit: “who uses Emailage?” – 90% of the room raised their hands. This motivates us to continue to improve the
quality of our products.

Are there any factors that have played key roles in shaping your organization’s road map?
To thrive in a certain segment of business you must have two basic things: expertise in the area and creativity. Those are the components that took us where we are today. Fraud is constantly evolving. You need to experiment with new things all the time, the same way fraudsters do. They are always trying to find ways to succeed, they are using the exact same two basic components that we are using (expertise and creativity). So, the one who has more expertise and creativity wins.

What were the grounds on which you have expanded your company and its offerings over the years?
We are expanding globally. We have offices in the United States, Latin America and Europe and have customers in more than 50 countries. Our product works extremely well regardless where our customer is or where their customers are. We are constantly expanding our existing product’s capabilities and making it more and more accurate every week.

Where do you see you and your company a couple of years from now?
We see our company being an important part of the decision making for most global companies, who will increasingly rely on our intelligence and network, in order to be able to separate the good from the bad, without impacting their internal processes.
