Facebook confirms development of augmented reality glasses

Facebook confirms development of augmented reality glasses
The Silicon Review
25 October, 2018

Augmented reality (AR) is definitely the future of entertainment. Most tech investors are rushing to pour their money into the budding AR market, with hopes of high returns in the future. Facebook is hoping to get an edge over the competition with its AR glasses. Although, not commercially available as of now, the social media giant is aggressively pursuing its AR gadget. When unveiled, it would be Facebook’s second homegrown hardware device, after its Portal smart display.

Facebook can be said to have officially entered the VR/AR market with its acquisition of Oculus VR in 2014. The decision to build AR glasses was mentioned by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2017. He explained that Facebook wanted to get to the glasses eventually, but lacked the tech to build one. He went on to clarify that his company would build the VR as a viable stepping stone to get to AR. The idea behind the AR is to treat users to an immersive experience that is unlike any other. The closest we can get to an engagingly immersive entertainment platform is in a 3D or 4D movie theatre. But as the AR technology gets more and more sophisticated, we can expect products that would seem like something out of a science fiction movie.

The race is on to roll out the first commercially available AR experience, with Microsoft’s HoloLens and Google’s very own Google Glass. Apple too isn’t far behind with its AkoniaHolographics and Vrvana, both being AR hardware makers.
