Congress has finally passed a law to make hemp legal to grow in the US. Although both hemp and marijuana are derived from the same plant, hemp doesn’t make anyone high. It is mainly used in food, fuel, medicine, and jewelry. The law has been passed after acknowledging the difference between hemp and marijuana.

To be specific, both are a variety of cannabis plant but as hemp contains less than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is much safer for consumption. THC is basically the chemical compound that has the psychoactive properties. Hemp is used in the form of a trendy chemical name cannabidiol (CBD). As per the manufacturers, hemp can be used to relieve pain and depression and deal with other health problemsbut there has not been any strong evidence for the claims.

Hemp agriculture has been controversial for years because of its legal history.Any form of cannabis abuse has been banned in the US since the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Moreover, many other laws have been passed todeclare marijuana products dangerous in any form of substance abuse.

“The 2018 bill is actually passed to amend the Controlled Substances Act to make very clear that CBD derived from hemp would not be considered a controlled substance,” says Shawn Hauser, a senior associate at cannabis law firm Vicente Sederberg.
