Planet is taking the drapes off its new manufacturing space in San Francisco
The Silicon Review
17 September, 2018

Planet, a company that works to monitor earth using satellites is unveiling its new manufacturing laboratory space in San Francisco. The company established by ex-NASA employees is working hard to build low-orbit satellites that can capture the images of earth. The new lab is set up by the company in the heart of Harrison Street, California. The expansion is the result of leveraging some of the $183 million the company raised in funding. As per the company’s claim, the new manufacturing space is reportedly one of the most productive satellite manufacturing labs in the world.

The manufacturing site spread across more than 25,000 square feet is an ideal place where Planet engineers work together to build “doves” or machines. The new manufacturing site is much bigger in size compared to Planet’s old lab, and with this new lab, the company claims that its engineers will design up to 40 satellites every week.

Planet concentrates to build smaller satellites with one to three-year lifespan instead of building large and bulky satellites. These small but fast satellites can take two images per second, and then the images are classified as water, coral, forests, roads etc. The satellites capture images from lesser visited areas of the earth. The company’s satellite imaging systems have collected data on the devastation of roads in Syria, studied coral reef destruction in Australia etc.
