Facebook attempts to be more transparent, adds a feature that tells why you are seeing that post
The Silicon Review
01 April, 2019

As an endeavor to be more transparent to users, Facebook is introducing a new feature to its app which tells people why they are seeing any particular post. The social media platform is helping people have better control over their News Feed. It explains why a certain post from friends, pages, and groups appear on users’ feeds. It also helps to control their regularity to some extent.

It will appear in a clickable format, which asks "Why am I seeing this post?" It is similar to the feature which we see in Google ads reading “Why this ad?” which is a security measure to address privacy-related and other concerns in online advertising.

If anything that appears in the feed seems inappropriate, one can just hit the question, "Why am I seeing this post?" in the drop-down menu accessible in the right-hand side of the post. The reasons will be pretty straightforward like the post is by one of the users’ friends or any group they have joined or page they have followed. However, users will be able to dig a little deeper into a post to investigate any questionable content that arrives in the News Feed.

Users can know how their past interactions on the app led to a post appearing in their feed i.e. how often one clicks on shared links or play videos.

“We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people's well-being," said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO.
