Domino's, the fast food giant, pulled itself from pizza's birthplace

Domino's, the fast food giant
The Silicon Review
10 August, 2022

The report says the last store of Domino's pizza in Italy has been closed after the company that operated its outlets in the country filed for bankruptcy.

The firm ePizza SpA held Domino's franchise. The coronavirus pandemic highly impacted the firm. The firm filed bankruptcy in April, which resulted in the shutting down of Domino's in Italy.

Domino's is the world's largest pizza chain, with more than 18,300 stores in over 90 international markets, most of which are run as franchises. But the company has struggled to win over customers in Italy since its launch in 2015. According to ePizza, the company along with Covid restrictions had to face increasing competition as traditional restaurants started using delivery apps.

When it entered the birthplace of pizza seven years ago, Domino's aimed to stand out from the country's traditional pizza makers with a distinctive menu including US-style toppings like pineapple and a comprehensive home delivery service. But people around the country were not pleased with Domino's and its idea of standing out. Some social media users of the country celebrated the news of the fast food giant's exit from Italy.
