Prince Harry and Meghan Meet B...Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met survivors of the Bondi Junction mass shooting during their Sydney visit. The Silicon Review reports on the Duke and Duchess's private hospital visit to offer support to victims and families.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met with survivors of the Bondi Junction mass shooting during a private visit to Sydney hospitals on Thursday, offering comfort to victims still recovering from the April 3 attack that left seven people dead.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent nearly two hours at St Vincent's Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital, speaking with patients, families and medical staff. Harry, who has been outspoken about mental health and trauma recovery, was seen embracing several survivors.
"To have them take time out of their visit to come and sit with us it means more than they will ever know," said Sarah Chen, 34, who was wounded in the attack while shopping with her young daughter, who was unharmed . "Harry talked about how trauma doesn't have a timeline. He said healing takes as long as it takes.”
The Bondi Junction attack, carried out by a 22-year-old man with a history of mental illness, shocked Australia and prompted a national conversation about knife crime and mental health services. Seven victims ranging in age from 22 to 78 were killed, and a dozen others were injured before police shot and killed the attacker.
Harry & Meghan's visit was not officially announced in advance, consistent with their practice of keeping charitable work private. The couple is in Sydney for the annual meeting of the Invictus Games Foundation, the adaptive sports competition Harry founded for wounded service members.
Meghan, who has focused on issues of grief and resilience in her public work, was seen wiping away tears as a young mother described losing her husband in the attack.
"We just wanted them to know that people around the world are thinking of them," Meghan told hospital staff. "Sometimes the only thing you can offer is presence. That's what we wanted to give today."
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked the couple for their visit, saying it "lifted spirits at a time when the community needed it most." The couple's Australian tour continues Friday with a visit to a mental health facility in Newcastle.
As Prince Harry & Meghan Markle meet Bondi shooting survivors during their Sydney visit, The Silicon Review examines how the couple's quiet act of presence speaks louder than any speech and why the Duke and Duchess continue to focus on trauma and resilience even as their own public battles dominate headlines.
