thesiliconreview-leroy-e-jones-founder-president-ceo-gsi-health“Working towards a world in which the care everyone receives for health issues is optimized.”

GSI Health, a leading health information technology company, unites patients, doctors, and payers of all kinds, supporting collaborative, “whole person” health care for effective population health management within complex populations. Its innovative solutions deliver the bigger picture of patient care, moving beyond just medical data to integrate social and behavioral information from across the community so that caregivers can manage, analyze, and engage with patients in real time as they move through the care delivery system. Caregivers gain keener insights that improve the quality of care and the overall health of the population, enabling organizations to achieve better outcomes while improving ROI. GSI Health has offices in Philadelphia and New York.

In Conversation with the Key Executive

Why was the company founded? How did you select the vertical and decide to be a part of the global platform?

Many people in my life suffered from chronic diseases—and I saw how their lives were governed by the issues they had. This hit home in an ultimate way when my mother, who was an insulin-dependent diabetic, also developed cancer. While fighting her battle with cancer, she ended up forsaking her normal treatments for diabetes, largely due to transportation challenges and a lack of physician coordination—which had a significant impact on her quality of life.

It was clear that when care providers just treat a disease instead of treating the whole person—including the medical, social, and behavioral issues that can impact their lives—patients are not receiving the care they need to achieve optimal health. This experience is far from unique. This is why GSI Health’s vision is Healthcare Solved. We strive to optimize care to improve the health outcomes of patients and populations.

Tell us about your first product that was launched.

Our cloud-based GSIHealthCoordinator solution delivers collaborative care management and robust analytics in a single platform, bringing insights closer to those who are delivering care and empowering those caregivers to make decisions about how to best spend their time and resources. Our platform enables quality “whole person” and “whole population” care through efficient communication and information sharing, workflow within interdisciplinary care teams, robust analytics that stratify the population and identify gaps in care, and real-time reporting on outcomes and operations. We help organizations reduce unnecessary hospital and emergency department usage and lower risk so they can achieve their clinical and financial goals.

What were the grounds on which you have expanded your company and its offerings over the years?

GSI Health has been in business since 2003, originally providing interoperability solutions for our clients focusing on cutting-edge health IT initiatives. We began our product pursuit after realizing that the shift in healthcare payment to a model in which providers are paid for keeping patients well (fee-for-value) rather than the number of services they perform (fee-for-service) meant that coordination among all care providers that impact lives would become critical. We then built a tool that unites those care providers so that they can produce the best outcomes for their shared patients. Prior to that, the industry’s answer was to have providers share data on those patients—which is an incomplete solution. We advanced that approach to promote shared experience and responsibility through interdisciplinary care teams.

What do you feel are the reasons behind your product’s popularity?

At GSI Health, we believe that getting the right information into the right hands will have a tremendous benefit for healthcare. Our product delivers a technology bridge between care coordination and analytics that enables caregivers to see the big picture of care, empowering them to make better, more informed decisions on how to spend their time and resources so they can best impact their patients. This makes healthcare delivery more efficient, reduces risk, and improves overall population health.

Where do you see GSI Health a couple of years from now?

We strive to be on the vanguard of driving innovation in the healthcare industry to help our clients succeed as they transition to the world of population health management and value-based arrangements. To support this goal, we are working to improve our community-based care management workflow to help providers care for more patients with fewer resources, enhanced interoperability for data exchange to improve access to care plan information, and enhanced analytics to help teams better incorporate socioeconomic factors into their care coordination and management efforts to improve outcomes. These capabilities will help us move a little closer to our vision, Healthcare Solved—i.e., the optimization of care delivery.
