Microsoft will soon phase out ...This time, the services that are being eliminated are Remote Mailslots, Webclient (WebDAV), and Computer Browser
While Microsoft frequently updates supported versions of Windows with fresh capabilities and improvements, it occasionally discontinues older features or services that are no longer in line with its long-term strategic goal for the operating system's growth. WordPad's deprecation was announced in September, and new Windows 11 Canary builds suggest that the Movies & TV and Windows Maps apps might be retired by the company—at least from clean installs. Three more Windows old services have now been deprecated.
X (previously Twitter) user @XenoPanther noticed that Microsoft has added three services this month to the web document where the company tracks deprecated Windows applications. This time, the services that are being eliminated are Remote Mailslots, Webclient (WebDAV), and Computer Browser. When Secure Message Block version 1 (SMB1) was removed from Windows 10, the Computer Browser service, driver, and device location protocol were automatically disabled since they were considered insecure. In the meantime, modern versions of Windows no longer start the WebDAV API by default; it is an extension of HTTP that started to roll out with Windows Vista. Lastly, an inter-process communication (IPC) mechanism called Remote Mailslots that was first made accessible with MS-DOS will also be phased out.
