Linux Foundation Launches LF B...The initiative is backed by leading industry players including Adtran, ZTE, Radisys, and Netsia
The Linux Foundation has announced the formation of LF Broadband, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming the broadband and Passive Optical Network (PON) industries through open-source innovation. This new effort brings together a collection of projects, including the SEBA reference design and the VOLTHA open-source project, both of which were previously hosted by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF).
LF Broadband’s Directed Fund has been established to support broadband-related open-source projects in deployment with major telecom providers such as Deutsche Telekom and Türk Telekom. The initiative is backed by leading industry players including Adtran, ZTE, Radisys, and Netsia, emphasizing its commitment to open interfaces and cloud-native architecture. Arpit Joshipura, who serves as the General Manager of Networking and Orchestration at the Linux Foundation, has been appointed as Executive Director of LF Broadband. Furthermore, the LF Broadband Governing Board has elected Manuel Paul of Deutsche Telekom and Ahmet Fethi Ayhan of Türk Telekom as co-chairs.
The initiative’s flagship projects, VOLTHA and SEBA, are already in production environments, delivering significant cost savings and enabling multi-vendor, disaggregated solutions. VOLTHA v.2.12, the latest version, includes enhancements that improve device management, error handling, and support for additional subscriber profiles. LF Broadband seeks to lead the next generation of broadband technologies by offering a neutral platform for cooperation between suppliers, end users, and researchers.
