Hantavirus outbreak: Six Hantavirus Cruise Passengers Quarantined in Australia

Hantavirus outbreak: Six passengers from the hantavirus-hit MV Hondius arrived in Perth and are now in quarantine at Bullsbrook Centre. The Silicon Review reports on Australia's strictest-in-the-world quarantine measures and the WHO's 42-day monitoring period.

Six passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship at the centre of the deadly hantavirus outbreak have arrived in Australia and been placed in quarantine at the Bullsbrook Centre for National Resilience in Perth.

The repatriation flight, which departed from the Netherlands, landed at RAAF Base Pearce on Friday. The group includes four Australian citizens, one permanent resident, and one New Zealand citizen. Health Minister Mark Butler confirmed that all six passengers have tested negative for Hantavirus and remain symptom-free.

Despite the negative results, Australia has imposed the strictest quarantine measures in the world. Most countries are letting their repatriated passengers go back home after two or three days, but Butler said Australia has decided on a precautionary basis to take a stronger approach.

The quarantine period is set for three weeks at the purpose-built 500-bed facility, which was constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Staffs from the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre in Darwin have been deployed to manage the quarantine operation.

The World Health Organization recommends a 42-day monitoring period for Hantavirus due to its incubation period, and Butler confirmed that arrangements beyond the initial three weeks are being coordinated with New South Wales and Queensland health authorities, where the Australian passengers reside.

The flight crew, who wore full personal protective equipment for the duration of the journey, will also remain in isolation at Bullsbrook until test results confirm the passengers are virus-free.

As six hantavirus cruise passengers are quarantined in Perth under Australia's toughest repatriation protocols, The Silicon Review examines how federal and state health authorities are coordinating to ensure zero risk of transmission to the Australian community.

Q: How many passengers from the Hantavirus cruise ship arrived in Australia?
A: Six passengers arrived in Perth on Friday, including four Australian citizens, one permanent resident, and one New Zealand citizen. All had tested negative for Hantavirus before boarding the repatriation flight.

Q: Where are the Hantavirus cruise passengers being quarantined in Australia?
A: The passengers are being quarantined at the Bullsbrook Centre for National Resilience, a 500-bed purpose-built facility approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Perth that was constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: How long will the Hantavirus cruise passengers be quarantined in Australia?
A: The passengers will quarantine for at least three weeks at the Bullsbrook facility, with a review to determine arrangements for the remainder of the WHO's recommended 42-day monitoring period.

Q: Why is Australia imposing stricter quarantine measures than other countries?
A: Health Minister Mark Butler said Australia has taken a precautionary approach with the strongest quarantine arrangements in the world, as most countries only quarantine repatriated passengers for two to three days before allowing home isolation.

Q: Are any of the quarantined passengers showing symptoms of Hantavirus?
A: No. All six passengers have tested negative for Hantavirus and are currently symptom-free. They underwent PCR testing before leaving the Netherlands and will be tested again in quarantine.

Q: What is the Bullsbrook quarantine facility where the passengers are being held?
A: The Bullsbrook Centre for National Resilience is a 500-bed facility with customised ventilation systems, self-contained units with bathrooms, televisions, internet, and small kitchens. It was built during the COVID-19 pandemic.
