Australian Federal Police Seiz...The Australian Federal Police have made the largest cocaine seizure in the nation's history, uncovering 2.7 tonnes of the drug with a street value of Aud $816 million hidden in a secret bunker in western Sydney.
The Australian Federal Police have shattered every record. On Friday, officers raided a semi-rural property in Londonderry, western Sydney, and discovered 2.7 tonnes of cocaine hidden in an elaborate underground bunker system.
The drugs, with an estimated street value of Aud $816 million, were found in plastic tubs buried in compartments concealed beneath false floors inside three shipping containers at the rear of the property. This haul would have equated to approximately three million street-level deals.
Two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested at the scene after allegedly attempting to flee from police. They have been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug an offence carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. They appeared before a NSW Local Court on Saturday and were remanded in custody.
The investigation, codenamed Operation Minjiang, began in May when police responding to a truck fire at a boat ramp in Midge Point, North Queensland, spotted 40 kilograms of cocaine floating in nearby waters. Police will allege the cocaine seized in Sydney was imported near Midge Point and transported to Sydney at the direction of a Sydney-based organised crime group.
An alleged mother vessel, the MV Wealth, has been detained by authorities in the Solomon Islands for further investigation. Police also suspect the same shipment was linked to 178 kilograms of cocaine and 142 kilograms of methamphetamine seized earlier in Queensland.
Six other people have been arrested and charged as part of their alleged roles in the drug import enterprise. Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay said the bust demonstrated the extreme lengths criminals will go to in pursuit of profit. "Investigations into the origin of the drugs remain ongoing, and we will work with our international and domestic law enforcement partners to identify the criminal syndicates," he said.
As the Australian Federal Police dismantle one of the country's largest organised crime networks, The Silicon Review examines how this record seizure sends a clear message to drug syndicates that Australia is no safe haven for their trade.
