Defense robotics startup Overland AI raises a $100M Series B to scale autonomous ground vehicle software for the U.S. Army, Marines, and allied forces.

Defense robotics startup Overland AI has secured a $100 million Series B funding round to rapidly scale its autonomous software stack for ground vehicles used by the U.S. armed forces and allied militaries. The round was co-led by Shield Capital and Lockheed Martin Ventures, with significant participation from General Catalyst and the U.S. Army’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).

The company’s flagship product, TERRAIN-AI autonomous software, is a software platform that enables military wheeled and tracked vehicles from Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) to logistics trucks to navigate complex, off-road, and GPS-denied environments autonomously. The system uses a combination of advanced computer vision, LiDAR, and proprietary AI models trained on diverse, challenging terrain data to make real-time navigation decisions without human intervention.

"This capital is a force multiplier," said Overland AI CEO, retired Army Colonel Mark Jensen. "It allows us to accelerate deployment from prototypes and limited trials to program-of-record scale, directly supporting the Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) and Autonomous Ground Resupply initiatives. Our goal is to turn any vehicle in the DoD’s fleet into an optionally-manned asset."

The funding follows a series of successful, high-profile tests with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, where Overland AI-equipped vehicles demonstrated the ability to conduct convoy resupply missions and reconnaissance in simulated combat zones. The software is designed to reduce soldier workload and risk, particularly in contested logistics and “dull, dirty, and dangerous” missions.

Strategic investor Lockheed Martin highlighted the integration potential. "Overland’s AI is a critical software layer for next-generation ground systems. This investment deepens our partnership to deliver integrated autonomy across air, land, and sea domains," said a Lockheed Martin Ventures executive.

Analysts note the raise reflects the Pentagon’s urgent push to incorporate AI and autonomy into its modernization plans, spurred by lessons from recent conflicts highlighting vulnerabilities in traditional supply lines. The startup now faces the critical phase of transitioning from successful demonstrations to rigorous, at-scale testing and the lengthy military procurement process.

The new capital will be used to triple engineering and field operations teams, achieve critical safety and security certifications, and expand international partnerships with NATO allies. Overland AI is now valued at approximately $850 million post-money.
